does anyone collect Double Eagles mostly for bullion value?
Double Eagles and other US gold coins seem to have declined in price. Apmex has St. Gaudens extra fine or better for $50 or so over spot. Does anyone collect these for bullion value with numismatic being a backup?

If I can buy numismatic gold for bullion price, great, I will do so, but I would not sell for less than numismatic price.
I also would be picky about the condition (depending on the year and mink mark). The Great Ag |

What The Great Ag said......I have some numismatic, most of which I bought very close to bullion price - if it wasn't graded I got it graded for a better sales price. |

a local dealer offered me $20 over spot and I grabbed...they are neat! A 1899 double eagle liberty for $20 over spot...works out to $40 over spot at $626/oz for gold...not a bad deal in my book and kinda fun to own. I will buy a few more I think. Would you?

Hey, Jelly:
What are the years and mint marks? If you can, attach a pic of the coins. Overall sounds like a good deal to me. I always prefer numistmatic gold over bullion coins. The Great Ag |

Its a good enough photo - I don't see a mintmark - therefore its from Philadelphia........the only other two from that year would be marked CC or S (Carson City or San Francisco) |

Wow! I say you got a good deal. The pics are not that bad, and since there is no mint mark, its from the Philly mint. From the quality of the pics, I'd say you have an AU 55-58 Double Eagle worth retail around $700 and up depending of the store. PCGS has the price at $840, but that is very high. Good deal. When you said you were buying eagles, I thought you were buying the $10 face value, called eagles. The $20 face value is called a double eagle, and the heraldic eagle on the reverse is one the most beautiful eagle designs, in my opinion. The Great Ag |
Re: does anyone collect Double Eagles mostly for bullion value?
thanks for the info. Yes, Double Eagles. Of course. And no mint mark means Philly, good info.
I think I'll go back and buy a few more. I love 'em. And at what amounts to, what, $50 over spot, that's $35 more than a high quality modern bullion coin and the $35 is more than made up for in the charm. |

Lancers, from your URL:
